Diabetes

What is it?

A person with diabetes does not absorb glucose (blood sugars) properly and it stays circulating in the blood (a condition known as hyperglycaemia). This can damage the body’s tissues over time. This damage can lead to disability and life-threating health problems, including problems with your feet.

There are three main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes (feet are not commonly affected)

Why do I need my feet checked by a podiatrist if I have diabetes?

People with diabetes are at risk of:

  • The nerves in the feet becoming dull and less responsive to pain over time
  • The blood vessels hardening and becoming less able to push the blood down to the feet
  • The skin not being able to heal from cuts and scratches

If these changes go unchecked and without proper management from a podiatrist it can lead to a number of more serious foot and overall health complications, such as amputations.

How can Our Podiatrist help?

At Our Podiatrist we assess your feet regularly, monitor any changes and put a treatment plan in place to prevent any major foot problems from occurring.

Treatment can include:

  • Skin and nail care
  • Footwear modifications
  • Custom foot orthotics
  • Regular tests to pick up problems before they arise
