Bunions

What is it?

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a condition that affects the ball of the foot. It is usually felt as stiffness, swelling, redness and pain at the big toe joint when wearing shoes and walking.

Patients with bunions usually have a family history of bunions. Some things that may lead to bunions developing are:

  •   Wearing shoes that don’t fit properly
  •   Wearing high heeled shoes
  •   Repeated foot pronation (foot rolling in) during walking
  •   Reduced flexibility

The increased pressure on the big toe joint can also lead to corns and callus developing. As the bunion progresses, pain can be felt across the outside of the foot. Pain is typically relived by removing shoes, wearing open-toed and wide fitting footwear.
